Zombies...really?

Zombies. I just don't get zombies.

From the myriad of zombie movies to the increasing number of zombie themed books it seems as if Zombies are the next vampires. Classics like Pride and Prejudice have been reworked to include zombie themes. Young Adult books with zombie themes are exploding including a series by Daniel Waters called Generation Dead. Suddenly teens who die start coming back as zombies. No one knows why, but the politically correct police are on the case. The living-impaired go to school, play football on the team and even date the cool Goth chick.

I've read one at the recommendation of one of my students and I still don't get it. Zombies are reanimated dead bodies. They are decaying, smelly and gooey. They eat you alive. Ewww.

I just don't get it.

I agree zombies r not cool. I tried to read
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, couldn't do
it . Zombies work as minor characters- like
the ones Anita Blake used to raise;)
But as major characters- a no go for me.
Kissing a zombie-icky and gross to imagine.
On a side note--- y r people revamping the classics ?
Next to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, there
was Sense and Sensibility andSea Monsters and
others of the same!

I like zombies. I don't think there's anything romantic about them, but I've said before I think they are a great reflection on society and human fear. Of course, I write about them from time to time, so I may be a little bit biased.

Sigh. No, I don't either. Absolutely no attraction there for me.

Jenn--Zombies creep me out in a way nothing else does. Old school vamps and werewolves, Jason and Freddie, nope, can't hold a candle to the creep out factor of a zombie. Can't do it, I'll have nightmares for days.

See, Jae, that's a good thing for a horror writer. There are people who LOVE being scared on that level, and writers thrive on it. James zombie story, The Zombie Chronicles: Escape, is more conspiracy/thriller with minimal zombies on the side, and a lot of hardcore zombie fans actually complained about that. I like to put people into situations with zombies that make you think about yourself in that situation, which to me, is pretty freakin' scary.
